Visually, Konya is a very different city from anywhere I’ve ever been. It is a huge city – the seventh largest in Turkey, with about the population of Dallas – but its center looks like a small town. Narrow streets, local vendors, not a lot of glitz. It’s a very conservative town, and almost every woman I saw was kapalı, covered with at least a headscarf, if not by the full chador. Modern buildings are quite plain, but many of the ancient Selcuk palaces have beautiful turquoise accents. Here are a few of my favorite sights from Konya.
